Owen Phillips

Owen Phillips is an illustrator and freelance artist based in London. Since leaving the University of Brighton, he’s worked for The Guardian, Lee, Rough Trade and Passenger Records.

One of my favourite mediums is ink, which is probably partly why I love his work so much. Ink gives his work a precise edge, and at the same time an imperfect quality as well as a fantastic contrasting effect. Phillips mixes the scale of the images in his work, and somehow they don’t clash, he manages to mould them to fit together.

He created a 12'' Sleeve for Passenger Records, and he makes it look amazing, despite the fact they’re just images of tires. He has used such detail and the illustrations fill the space, imposing upon your comfort zone despite the fact they’re on paper.

Phillips reminded me that my work doesn’t have to be fully created on screen, which has become a bad habit of mine. I don’t even consider any other method now.
